I’m a Registered Manager with over 20 years experience in both a care home and domiciliary care agency and this is my career advice.
Registered Manager, Rachel Bedford, gives an overview of her career journey to becoming a registered manager and what her job entails.
What qualifications do you have?
I hold a number of qualifications in the fields of health, social care, and management. Beginning with a Level 2/3 certification in Health and Social Care, I gained foundational knowledge and skills crucial for working in these sectors. Building upon this, I attained a Level 4 qualification in Health and Social Care which allowed me to gain a deeper understanding in addressing complex challenges within these areas. Following on from that, my achievement of the Registered Managers Award underscores my capability to effectively lead and manage teams, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care and services.
In addition to my expertise in health and social care, I have bolstered my managerial acumen by obtaining a Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership. This qualification equips me with advanced leadership skills, strategic management capabilities, and the ability to navigate the complexities inherent in leading organisations. Combined, these qualifications demonstrate my commitment to professional development and readiness to excel in roles that demand a comprehensive understanding of health and social care practices, alongside leadership and management skills.
My typical day working as a Registered Manager
My typical day centres around the smooth running of the care service. Safeguarding is a primary concern, and I dedicate significant attention to implementing policies and procedures to protect vulnerable individuals under our care.
Staffing and recruitment are ongoing tasks and require strategic planning to maintain an efficient and competent workforce. Supporting staff in their roles is integral to fostering a positive work culture and ensuring the delivery of exceptional care.
Managing budgets and contracts is another vital responsibility which involves meticulous oversight to allocate resources effectively.
Lastly, meeting regulatory requirements is a continuous endeavour, involving adherence to legal standards, licensing regulations, and quality assurance protocols to uphold the highest standards of service. Balancing these responsibilities demands multitasking, effective communication, and a commitment to upholding the values of compassionate care and organisational excellence.
What do you believe are the key skills and qualities needed for your job?
There are several key skills and qualities that are essential for success in the role of Registered Manager. Firstly, being a people person is crucial as it fosters empathy, understanding, and the ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. Having a genuine desire to prioritise the wellbeing of clients and staff drives actions towards achieving the best outcomes for all involved.
Effective communication is also vital for leading teams, nurturing talent, and maintaining a positive work environment. Building effective working relationships with clients, families, and staff enhances the quality of care and services provided.
Possessing a good knowledge of regulations governing the industry, proficiency in managing budgets and resource optimisation are all fundamental skills.
My First Post As A Registered Home Manager
I began my journey as a Registered Manager at a 40-bed residential home in West Yorkshire. Having dedicated over 13 years to this home, I came through the ranks - starting as a Team Leader, progressing to Deputy Manager, and finally taking on the role of Registered Manager.
My hands-on experience at every level equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of the home's operations, enabling me to lead with empathy, efficiency, and a commitment to excellence.
What Keeps You Excited About Being A Registered Manager?
The opportunity to drive positive change. Being at the helm allows me to introduce initiatives to enhance our care practices, optimise processes and foster innovation. Each day presents unique challenges and opportunities - these keep me engaged and motivated as I navigate situations and find creative solutions to meet the needs of our clients.
I feel privileged to hold a position where I can support and empower amazing individuals, both within our team and among our clients. Witnessing the positive impact of our efforts on their lives is incredibly rewarding and reinforces my commitment to making a difference.
Being trusted with the responsibility to contribute to their wellbeing fills me with a sense of fulfilment and purpose.
